Since the moment I came to South Korea, I've received several recommendations for diverse foods that I might find appealing. However, I mostly opted for online orders as I don’t feel comfortable dining out solo. On Tuesday, October 1, my two fellow graduate students and I decided to eat out. Initially, we planned to visit an Italian restaurant but changed our minds and headed to Chuncheon’s famous Dak Galbi Street. As we walked down the bustling street, I felt a wave of excitement wash over me. The lively atmosphere was contagious, with laughter and chatter blending with the sizzle of grills and the savory aroma of dak galbi cooking in the air.

We chose a bustling restaurant and ordered their famous dak galbi, which featured succulent pieces of chicken stir-fried with cabbage, onions, and udon noodles. The dish was cooked in front of us on a large hot plate, with a vibrant red sauce coating every bite of chicken and vegetables. The addition of chewy tteokbokki (rice cakes) and thin slices of sweet potato created a comforting mix of spicy, savory, and slightly sweet flavors. They also provided fresh ssam (lettuce leaves) for wrapping, along with a variety of banchan (side dishes). We had the usual kimchi, a refreshing cucumber salad, garlic cloves, and sliced green chili peppers to add a punch of heat. The combination of flavors, textures, and the spicy kick of dak galbi wrapped in lettuce was irresistible. With every bite, I felt more connected to this new culture.

As the afternoon drew to a close, I realized that this experience was more than just a meal. Sharing a table with my peers and immersing myself in the flavors of Chuncheon deepened my appreciation for the rich tapestry of South Korean cuisine. This delightful dak galbi adventure reminded me that food has the power to unite people, creating lasting memories and bridging cultural divides.
