Hello everyone,
This year, I celebrated Vesak, the Buddhist holiday commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha, in a place far from home South Korea. As a Sri Lankan, Vesak has always been a deeply rooted tradition in my life, filled with memories of vibrant lanterns, peaceful prayers, and the warmth of family and friends. But this time, it was different. I found myself in a foreign country, celebrating Vesak without the familiar sights and sounds of Sri Lanka.
In Korea, the celebrations for Vesak are not as widespread as in Sri Lanka, but the Buddhist community here does observe the day in their own way. I attended a small gathering at a local temple, where the rituals were surprisingly similar to those back home. There were offerings of flowers, incense, and candles symbols of peace, wisdom, and enlightenment. But despite the familiar customs, it still felt strange to be away from home. I missed the loud processions, the street vendors selling traditional sweets, and the sense of unity in my home country.
However, the experience of celebrating Vesak in a different culture also brought a sense of peace and reflection. I realized that although I was far from Sri Lanka, the true meaning of Vesak remained unchanged. It is not about the grand celebrations or the physical surroundings; it is about honoring the teachings of Buddha and reflecting on the values of compassion, mindfulness, and selflessness. I spent the day meditating and contemplating the teachings of Buddha, and in doing so, I felt connected to my roots, even though I was miles away from home.
Being in Korea for Vesak made me appreciate the universal nature of Buddhism. Even though the celebration might look different in various countries, the core principles remain the same. This experience has taught me that spirituality and tradition transcend borders and can be celebrated wherever we are, as long as we hold onto the values that bind us all.
Although I missed the festive atmosphere of Vesak in Sri Lanka, this year’s celebration in Korea allowed me to discover a new perspective on the holiday. It was a reminder that no matter where life takes us, we can always find a way to connect with our spiritual practices and traditions, making them meaningful in any place or time.
