While exploring the busy streets of Myeongdong, famous for its shopping, street food, and crowds, I discovered something different. Just a few steps away from all the noise and excitement stood a peaceful, beautiful structure: Myeongdong Cathedral.

This Catholic Church is more than just a place of worship, it's a symbol of history, faith, and resistance in Korea. Built in 1898, Myeongdong Cathedral is the oldest Gothic-style building in South Korea, and it has stood as a spiritual center for Korean Catholics for over a century.

When I entered the grounds, I was struck by the calm atmosphere. The red brick architecture, tall stained-glass windows, and high ceilings gave the cathedral a sacred and timeless feeling. I even learned that this church played a big role in Korea’s democracy movement during the 1970s and 1980s, many students and protesters took shelter here during times of political unrest.

Inside, I saw people quietly praying, lighting candles, and simply sitting in silence. It reminded me how a single place can carry not just religious meaning, but emotional and cultural weight as well. Whether you’re Catholic or not, Myeongdong Cathedral offers a moment of reflection and peace in the middle of a fast-paced city.

If you ever visit Seoul, I truly recommend stepping into this beautiful Church. It’s a place where history, beauty, and spirit come together, and I’m grateful I had the chance to experience it.
