Language & Culture Why Convenience Stores in Korea Are Dangerous

I often stay in the lab until very late and head home after midnight. Every time I pass the convenience store near my house, its bright lights pull me in like a moth. The problem is, I usually do not even need anything.
But once I walk in, everything suddenly looks tempting. Coffee, snacks, bread, instant noodles, lunch boxes — things I was not thinking about at all somehow start to feel necessary. And before I know it, I am standing at the counter holding two or three extra items I never planned to buy.
That is why I think convenience stores in Korea are a little dangerous. They are everywhere, they are always open, and they make late-night shopping feel way too easy. When I am tired after a long day, it becomes very easy to tell myself, “I deserve this.”
The most dangerous part is that convenience store food looks even better at night. Snacks I would ignore during the day suddenly look amazing. New drinks and random desserts become impossible to resist. At that point, the convenience store is no longer just a store. It becomes a test of self-control.
Of course, this is also one of the reasons convenience stores in Korea are so great. They are convenient, fun, and full of choices. But late at night, they can also be a trap.
So now, whenever I walk past the convenience store on my way home, I try to make a promise to myself: only buy what I really need. Honestly, that promise does not last very long.
