On October 1, 2024, I had the pleasure of attending the 2024 World Taekwondo Junior Championships held in Chuncheon, South Korea. This prestigious event, bringing together young athletes from 127 nations, was a thrilling reminder of my own Taekwondo journey over a decade ago.
Back when I was 17, I was a junior fighter in the 54 kg category, representing my city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. After months of intense training, I competed and earned a silver medal, a moment I remember fondly. That fight was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my youth, as it required discipline, resilience, and the support of my community.
Watching today's young competitors at the Chuncheon Air Dome, I couldn't help but feel nostalgic. It's been nearly 10 years since I last stepped into the ring, but the energy and spirit of Taekwondo remain deeply familiar. Seeing the determination in the eyes of these junior fighters reminded me of my own journey—one that shaped my character and left a lasting impact on my life.
This event is not only a significant moment for Chuncheon but also a celebration of the values of Taekwondo: respect, integrity, and perseverance. It was an emotional day for me, and I am grateful to have had the chance to witness this momentous occasion, reconnecting with a sport that played a pivotal role in my own personal growth.
