Mountains or sea? I’ve been asked this question many times, and I always find myself on the fence. I love the sea for its vastness, which makes me feel like there are no limits in my life; I can go as far as I want, and the sound of the waves always washes away my sorrows. However, mountains have their own magic—fresh air, immersion in nature, the thrill of conquering a challenging trail, and the breathtaking views from the summit all create a profound sense of achievement and serenity within me. Therefore, I can’t choose one over the other; each has its beauty, and I don’t want to limit myself to just one experience when both offer so much.
When I first entered Hallym University as a new graduate student and saw that our campus is surrounded by a mountain, I was filled with excitement. This mountain, Bonguisan, standing at 303 meters, isn’t just a beautiful backdrop; it has a rich history that adds depth to its charm. A Korean friend of mine told me that during the Korean War, Bonguisan served as a crucial strategic point. With this knowledge in mind, I felt an even deeper connection to the mountain. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, October 5, I took a solo hike to the top of Bonguisan.
As I walked, the hiking paths were well-defined, leading through lush greenery that seemed almost to wrap around me like a comforting blanket. The initial part of the trail featured wooden steps embedded in the earth, bordered by a simple rope railing. The trail felt warm, serene, and gentle, like an old friend guiding me on my journey. With each step, I left the noise of the world behind and entered a tranquil space. The greens of the forest deepened as the sun began to set, lending a golden hue to the landscape. I paused here and there, soaking in the quiet beauty of the place.
When I finally reached the summit, I took a moment to rest. From this vantage point, I enjoyed a stunning view of Chuncheon city, with tiny buildings scattered across the valley below. The calm blue waters of Soyang River, Uiam Lake, and Chuncheon Lake shimmered in the distance, creating a picturesque scene. This hike up Bonguisan was not merely a physical ascent; it will always remind me of the soothing beauty and serenity that nature offers, calling me back whenever I need to reconnect with myself.
