The Story Behind Ulsan Rock (Ulsanbawi) in Seoraksan  

Have you ever heard of Ulsan Rock, a famous landmark in Seoraksan National Park? Despite its name, it’s not located in the city of Ulsan! So, how did it get its name? Here are a few fascinating legends and stories behind this mysterious rock formation:

1. The Fence Theory:
   The name "Ulsan" may come from the rock's appearance, which resembles a giant fence. Over time, the term "fence mountain" (울타리 산, Ultari San) is believed to have been shortened to "Ulsan."

2. The Legend of the Latecomer Rock:
   According to legend, when the Creator was assembling rocks to form the famous Geumgangsan (Diamond Mountain), a giant rock from Ulsan (the city) arrived too late and had to settle in Seoraksan instead. Thus, it was named "Ulsan Rock" as a reminder of its origin.

3. The Crying Mountain Theory:
   On windy days, the sound of the wind passing through Ulsan Rock is said to resemble the sound of crying. This eerie phenomenon led to the name "Crying Mountain," which evolved into "Ulsan."
