Honestly, mime was not something I had much of an image for before going. Beyond the cliché of white face paint and pretending to touch an invisible wall, I had no real idea what to expect. But when I heard that the 2026 Chuncheon Mime Festival was running for eight days from May 24th to 31st under the theme "Body Landscape," I decided to go, and it turned out to be completely different from what I had imagined.

The festival spread well beyond a single theater. There were street performances you could stumble across while walking around the city, late-night events, and outdoor art programs that filled different corners of Chuncheon. The experience of just wandering and suddenly encountering a performance mid-street felt genuinely fresh. Watching people convey emotion through movement alone, without a single word, was far more powerful than I expected.

The Chuncheon Mime Festival is recognized as one of the world's three major mime festivals, alongside the Mimos Mime Festival in France and the London Mime Festival in the UK. That surprised me. I had always thought of Chuncheon mainly as the place you go for dak-galbi, and finding out it hosts something with that kind of international standing felt like discovering a completely different side of the city. If it comes around again next year, I would like to go back.
