Social Korean Claw Machines

Walking around Korean streets these days, it is hard to miss the rows of claw machines packed with plush toys. I used to walk right past them, but on a recent trip to Chuncheon, I finally gave one a try.
The concept is simple enough — you control a claw and try to grab a stuffed animal. But once you actually play, it turns out to be a lot harder than it looks. Prices vary from around 1,000 won to as much as 7,000 won depending on the machine, and most now accept card payments, so you do not even need to carry cash.
After watching the mime festival in Chuncheon, I stopped by a claw machine shop nearby and spotted a cute bear plush that caught my eye. I told myself just one try, but that turned into several attempts. The claw would grip the toy, lift it just enough to get my hopes up, and then drop it every single time. When I finally succeeded on one of the last tries, the rush was genuinely satisfying. The people watching nearby cheered along, which made it feel even better.
The problem, if you can call it that, is how addictive it gets. One failure leads to another try, and before long you have spent more than you planned. But the feeling of walking out with that plush in your hand makes it worth it. If you are new to Korea, it is absolutely worth trying at least once.
