During my recent visit to Seoul, I had the profound experience of visiting the War Memorial of Korea. This museum stands as a tribute to those who served and sacrificed their efforts during the Korean War, a conflict that shaped the nation’s history. As an Ethiopian, this memorial holds special significance for me because my grandfather was among the Ethiopian soldiers who came to Korea in 1951 to fight alongside the United Nations forces. He bravely served in this distant land for the cause of freedom, and seeing the recognition of his contribution filled me with immense pride.

The War Memorial of Korea, located in Yongsan, Seoul, was established to commemorate the Korean War and honor those who fought for the country’s independence. It not only serves as a reminder of the conflict but also as a symbol of the friendship and cooperation between Korea and the countries that came to its aid during its most trying times. Ethiopia was one of these nations, and the memorial has a dedicated section that honors the Ethiopian soldiers who fought in the Kagnew Battalion, which played a significant role in helping Korea during the war.

Walking through the museum, I was filled with a deep sense of gratitude and pride. Seeing how Korea remembers and respects the sacrifices of the Ethiopian soldiers, including my grandfather, was heartwarming. The museum does a remarkable job of preserving the history and ensuring that future generations never forget the contributions made by those who came from far and wide to assist Korea in its time of need.

Reflecting on my visit, I am proud not only of my grandfather’s legacy but also of the enduring friendship between Ethiopia and Korea. The fact that my grandfather's service, along with that of his fellow soldiers, is not forgotten is a testament to the respect and appreciation Korea holds for those who helped during the war. Visiting the War Memorial of Korea was a deeply personal and emotional experience for me, one that I will cherish forever.
