Food & Drink Exploring Uzbek Dishes

Exploring new flavors and cuisines is something I love, and I never miss a chance to dine out and try something unique. Since coming to South Korea, I’ve not only tried many Korean dishes but have also visited Italian, Chinese, Indian, Nepali, and Turkish restaurants. Last week, I visited an Uzbek restaurant named Eski Shahar, near Kangwon National University in Chuncheon. The restaurant was small but had a welcoming atmosphere.
I ordered Plov, Samsa, Salad, and a soft drink, and they also provided complimentary Green Tea. Plov is a hearty Uzbek rice dish often considered the national food. It resembles our traditional biryani, so I was mainly excited to try it. The dish was beautifully served, with tender chunks of beef, caramelized onions, and a vibrant mix of carrots and rice, all seasoned with cumin and a blend of other spices. Though it wasn’t as spicy as our traditional biryani, the flavors were well-balanced and rich, offering a comforting experience.
Alongside the Plov, I also enjoyed crispy Samsa, filled with a flavorful mix of spiced meat and vegetables. The outer shell provided a satisfying crunch with every bite. To round off the meal, I sipped on Green Tea, which was light and refreshing, perfectly cleansing the palate after the savory dishes.
