Food & Drink My Favorite Summer Treat

There’s something about Korean summers that hits differently — the sticky air, the sudden rain, the slow afternoons where everything feels just a little softer.
And on days like that, I always crave one thing: bingsu.
I still remember the first time I tried it. It wasn’t fancy — just a classic patbingsu from a tiny café near campus. But the moment that shaved ice touched my tongue, cold and fluffy like snow, I was in love. The sweet red beans, chewy rice cakes, and creamy condensed milk — it was the perfect balance of refreshing and comforting.
Since then, bingsu has become my little summer tradition. I try new flavors every chance I get: mango, matcha, Oreo, strawberry cheesecake… even one with whole honeycomb on top! Some days I go with friends, sharing one giant bowl and lots of laughter. Other days, I enjoy it alone, slowly, like a soft pause in the middle of a hot day.
There are so many things to love about summer in Korea — the festivals, the fashion, the night markets — but for me, bingsu will always be the sweetest part of it all.
Sometimes, happiness really is just a bowl of ice and a quiet moment to enjoy it.
