I still remember the first day I tried Ashotchu, a popular Korean drink made by adding a shot of espresso to iced tea. The idea sounded completely strange to me. It felt like one of those combinations that should never work, and honestly, my first impression was not great. The taste was unusual, and I remember thinking, “Why do people drink this?”

But strangely enough, a day later, and then two days later, I kept thinking about it. So I decided to try it again. This time, it tasted completely different. What had seemed weird at first suddenly felt surprisingly refreshing and addictive. Before I knew it, Ashotchu had become one of those drinks I genuinely enjoyed.

The only problem was the sugar. Since iced tea is usually quite sweet, it did not feel like something I could drink often without feeling a little guilty. So for a while, it became more of an occasional treat. Then one day, I found out that a café near my school was selling a zero-sugar, low-calorie, decaf version of Ashotchu, and I was honestly thrilled. It had the flavor I liked, but without the same level of guilt.

These days, it is one of the drinks I recommend to people around me. It may sound like a strange combination at first, but I really think it is worth trying at least once. If you ever get the chance to try Ashotchu in Korea, you might be more surprised by how good it is than you expect.
