I think everyone has their own version of a small “adult flex.” Sometimes it is buying a snack you used to save carefully as a child and eating as much as you want. Sometimes it is getting a whole tub of ice cream that once felt special because you could only have a few bites. They are not huge luxuries, but they feel strangely satisfying.

Lately, life has felt a little tiring, so I decided to do something nice for myself. My version of an adult flex was making curry with an almost ridiculous amount of meat. Not a reasonable amount. Not a balanced amount. A very grown-up amount.

There was something so satisfying about it. Curry is already one of those comforting foods, but when you add a generous amount of meat, it somehow becomes even more comforting. It felt less like “just making dinner” and more like saying, “You know what? I deserve this.”

Maybe that is one of the funny things about being an adult. When you are young, you imagine adulthood as something grand or impressive. But sometimes it just means being able to make the exact kind of curry you want, without anyone telling you that you are putting in too much meat.

Of course, this was not some extravagant luxury. It was just curry. But it was my kind of luxury that day, and I was very satisfied with it. Sometimes adult happiness is not complicated. Sometimes it is simply a pot of curry filled with more meat than strictly necessary.
