Social Welcome to Bug Season

There’s something about summer in Korea that feels alive — the trees are greener, the air is thicker, and… the bugs? They’re everywhere.
At first, I was just surprised. A few ants near my window, a moth doing laps around my lamp. But by July? It’s their world, and I’m just visiting.
Cicadas sing outside like they’re putting on a concert. Mosquitoes somehow find you even indoors. I’ve learned to keep my window shut at dusk, and I now fully respect the power of an electric mosquito racket. (Life-changing.)
But oddly enough, I’ve come to expect it. Even appreciate it, in a strange way. The buzzing, chirping, fluttering — it’s part of what makes Korean summer feel real. Raw. Full of life. It’s nature reminding us that we’re not the only ones enjoying the heat.
So yes, I still flinch when something flies too close to my face. But I also smile when I hear the cicadas start up in the morning. Because somehow, even the bugs are part of this season’s rhythm.
