“Hello and welcome to the KECND podcast! I’m Madinabonu, a foreign student in Korea, and today we’re talking about something exciting and vibrant—university festivals and events. If you’ve ever been to a Korean university festival, you know they’re nothing short of amazing. From K-pop performances to delicious street food and fun activities, these festivals are a highlight of student life. But they’re more than just entertainment—they’re a cultural experience, a social hub, and a way for students, both Korean and international, to bond and create lasting memories. So, let’s dive into what makes these festivals special and how you can make the most of them!” --- What Are University Festivals? “Korean university festivals, known as 대동제 (Daedongje), usually happen in the spring and fall, when campuses come alive with music, food, and festivities. These events are a mix of tradition and modernity, where students celebrate their school spirit and invite the community to join in. Most festivals are organized by student councils and feature a wide range of activities, such as: Booths – Clubs and departments set up booths offering food, games, and unique experiences. Performances – Expect everything from dance showcases to traditional music performances. Guest Artists – The biggest highlight is often famous K-pop groups or DJs performing live on campus. Cultural Activities – Some festivals incorporate traditional Korean elements, such as hanbok experiences or traditional games.” --- Why Are These Festivals So Popular? “Korean university festivals are popular for several reasons: 1. Celebrity Performances Many universities invite top K-pop idols or rappers to perform, turning the festival into a mini concert. Schools like Yonsei, Korea University, and Hanyang are famous for their high-profile lineups, which attract not just students but also people from outside. 2. Food and Fun The food booths are one of the biggest draws—whether it’s tteokbokki, chicken, or international cuisine. Plus, fun games like karaoke challenges and photo zones create a lively atmosphere. 3. Networking and Socializing Festivals provide a great opportunity to meet new people, whether it’s fellow students, professors, or even alumni who come back to relive their university days.” Let’s talk about my experience as a Foreign Student “As a foreign student, experiencing my first university festival was both exciting and overwhelming. I was amazed by how friendly and welcoming everyone was. The booths run by different student clubs were so creative, and I got to try traditional Korean snacks and even participate in games! One thing that stood out to me was the sense of community—everyone was having fun, celebrating their school, and making memories together. It really helped me feel more connected to my university.” “University festivals are one of the best ways to immerse yourself in Korean student life. They offer a mix of culture, entertainment, and friendship that you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re into music, or food, or want to experience the lively atmosphere, there’s something for everyone. If you haven’t been to one yet, I highly recommend adding it to your university bucket list!” “Thank you for tuning in to today’s KECND podcast.
