“World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, June 17”

Welcome to another episode of my podcast, where I delve into important environmental issues that affect our world. June 17 of each year is observed as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. This day served as a reminder of the critical importance of combating desertification and drought, as well as raising awareness about their devastating impacts on the environment and human livelihoods.

So, let’s dive in and explore this global issue. Desertification is the process of land degradation that leads to the expansion of deserts or the transformation of productive land into barren wastelands. It occurs due to a variety of factors, including climate change, deforestation, overgrazing, and unsustainable agricultural practices.

On the other hand, droughts are prolonged periods of abnormally low rainfall, resulting in water scarcity, crop failure, and a host of other ecological and socio-economic challenges. Both desertification and droughts have far-reaching consequences for ecosystems, communities, and economies worldwide. The theme for this year’s  World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is “Her Land. Her Rights”. It focuses on the urgent need to address these issues in the context of sustainable agriculture and food security.

As we commemorate World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Let's remember that the power to combat these challenges lies in our collective actions. By working together, we can protect our land, ensure food security, and build a more sustainable future.

Thank you for your attention!

Have a safe summer time!
