Hello and welcome to my podcast! I’m Shakhnoza, and we’re diving into an interesting question: "Are we getting more allergic to things in Korea?" First, let’s set the scene. Korea has seen a noticeable rise in reported allergies over the past few decades — things like food allergies, pollen allergies, skin allergies, and even reactions to dust mites and fine dust, or "미세먼지". But why is this happening? Experts point to several possible reasons. One major factor is "urbanization". As more people live in cities, we’re exposed to more pollution, less nature, and more processed food — all of which can affect our immune systems. Another factor is what scientists call the "hygiene hypothesis". It suggests that because we live in cleaner environments today — with less exposure to bacteria and parasites in early childhood — our immune systems sometimes “overreact” to harmless things like pollen or certain foods. And of course, "climate change" plays a role. Warmer temperatures can extend pollen seasons, increase mold, and worsen air pollution, all of which can trigger or worsen allergies. So, are Koreans really becoming more allergic? The numbers say "yes" — especially among children. According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control, childhood eczema, allergic rhinitis, and food allergies have all increased in the past twenty years. But it’s not all bad news. Awareness is improving. Schools are better prepared to handle allergic reactions. There’s more research into treatments, and people are more aware of how to manage triggers. In short, yes — allergies are on the rise in Korea, due to a mix of urban living, lifestyle changes, and environmental factors. But with better awareness and care, we can reduce the risks and keep ourselves and our families healthier. Thanks for listening!
