Do You Need to Upgrade Your Phone in Korea?

Many people are holding onto their old phones longer (like me)– instead of rushing out to buy the latest model of phone.

It started as a small inconvenience. My phone still worked—technically. But over time, little frustrations added up. Apps took longer to open, the battery drained quickly, and certain features just didn’t feel as smooth as they once were.

In Korea, where technology evolves faster than anywhere else, it was impossible not to notice the difference. On campus, classmates casually used the latest models, flipping between AI-powered tools and ultra-responsive screens. On the subway, digital payments and quick-scanning QR codes were the norm. Even professors used cutting-edge apps for lectures. Meanwhile, there were days when simply opening a document or responding to messages took longer than it should.

My tipping point came at the most inconvenient time—trying to make a simple mobile payment at a café. My screen froze. My app crashed. The person at the register waited, awkwardly glancing at the growing line. There was no choice but to dig through the bag for cash, feeling the weight of the moment.

That night, sitting in a tiny student apartment, the question wasn’t about whether a new phone was necessary—it was about whether resisting an upgrade was actually making life harder. Browsing through models online, the price tags were intimidating. Would it really be worth it?

The answer came the next morning when the phone refused to charge properly. No matter how the cable was adjusted, the battery barely budged.

By the end of the day, there was a new phone in hand. The speed, the smoothness—it felt like a fresh start. And in a place where everything moves fast, sometimes keeping up isn’t just about convenience. It’s about making life easier.
