Hello everyone,
South Korea is experiencing an unexpected and sharp drop in temperature this week, marking an early arrival of winter. After enjoying relatively mild autumn weather, residents across the country woke up to freezing conditions as a strong cold wave swept in from the north.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), cold air from Siberia began moving into the Korean Peninsula earlier this week, pushing temperatures down by more than 10 degrees Celsius overnight in many regions. In Seoul, the morning temperature fell to around minus 2 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the lowest so far this season. In the northern and inland areas, the mercury dropped even further, with some mountainous regions recording temperatures below minus 5 degrees.
Meteorologists explained that this sudden temperature drop is due to a high-pressure system from the northwest, which brought strong, dry winds and clear skies conditions that often accelerate nighttime cooling. The KMA has issued cold wave advisories for several provinces, warning the public to take precautions against frost and freezing conditions.
Energy demand has already started to rise, with local authorities urging households to use electricity efficiently to avoid power shortages. Meanwhile, health experts have advised the elderly and children to stay warm and avoid sudden temperature changes that could cause respiratory illnesses.
Weather officials predict that the cold spell will continue through the weekend before temperatures slightly recover next week. However, they warn that more cold waves could follow as Korea heads into what is expected to be a particularly chilly winter.
